Understand PCE (Process Cycle Efficiency)

Updated just now · 8 views ·

Process Cycle Efficiency (PCE) is the sanity check you look at first. It's the ratio of value-adding time to total lead time, expressed as a percentage.

The formula

PCE = (total Value-Add cycle time) / (total lead time) x 100

What good looks like

  • Continuous flow manufacturing: 25-30%+ is world-class.
  • Job shop / batch manufacturing: 5-15% is typical.
  • Office / knowledge work: 1-5% is extremely common (most of the time is waiting for someone to respond, sign, or review).

Where to see it in MapVS

Open any map, look at the Analytics tab in the right rail. PCE is the big number at the top. It updates live as you edit stages or new recordings come in.

How to improve it

There are only two levers: reduce non-value-add time (usually wait time) or eliminate non-value-add stages entirely. Ninety per cent of the time it's the first one - shrink queues, kill handoffs, batch smaller.
